James Hadley, MA, is the Director of the National Outreach Network, an NCI-wide effort to incorporate its community outreach and cancer information dissemination activities into the institute’s community-based research programs. The Outreach Network will include the Community Networks Program (CNP), the Minority Institutions/Cancer Center Partnerships (MI/CCP), the Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP), the Minority Based Community Clinical Oncology Program (MBCCOP), the National Community Cancer Centers Program (NCCCP) pilot, and the NCI-designated Cancer Centers. These existing programs, all with proven track records in the community, will provide the foundation for the National Outreach Network within medically underserved communities.

Prior to his appointment at CRCHD, Mr. Hadley was the Advocacy Relations Manager in the Office of Advocacy Relations at NCI. In this role, he worked to enhance public trust by fostering strong relationships and communications with cancer advocacy groups. He moderated educational teleconferences on research initiatives, clinical trials and late-breaking news featuring NCI leadership, principal investigators, and advocates. A bi-monthly e-newsletter, the NCI Nealon Digest, was published under his direction. He also facilitated meetings between advocacy group leaders and NCI senior leadership to build relationships and to develop mutually beneficial partnerships. The highlight of his tenure there was his leadership of the first-ever summit for advocates. This summit featured lectures, tours, a town hall meeting, sessions with the NCI Director, as well as opportunities for advocates to network with NCI and NIH staff among other advocates.

Mr. Hadley received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from San Jose State University in California, and earned a Master’s Degree in Mass Communications from Howard University in Washington, D.C. He began his NIH career in communications and outreach at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Later he moved to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases as the Public Liaison Officer in the Office of Communications and Public Liaison. He completed the NIH Cadre Management Program in 2000.
