Martha L. Hare, Ph.D., R.N., is a Health Scientist Administrator/Program Director at the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities. She serves as the co-Team Leader for the Patient Navigation Research Program. Dr. Hare works to create cooperative agreements concerned with eliminating gaps in cancer diagnosis and treatment for minority and underserved Americans. She is involved with Institute-wide activities, including participation in working groups concerned with eliminating health disparities in access to clinical trials, and with the impact of HIV on minority communities.

Prior to her appointment at the NCI, Dr. Hare served as Program Director at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) with lead responsibility for that Institute’s HIV/AIDS program and oncology portfolio. In that role, she developed a number of initiatives in HIV prevention and HIV and cancer symptom science, including publication of two special journal issues. Dr. Hare has published in the anthropological, public health and nursing literature. She also wrote numerous reports for the government before joining NIH and has presented at a variety of scientific and governmental meetings.

Dr. Hare earned a B.A. in anthropology from the State University of NY at Binghamton (now Binghamton University) and a B.S. in nursing from the Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing. Dr. Hare earned her Ph.D. in medical anthropology at the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at the New School for Social Research with dual interests (health disparities, and ethnomedicine), which she has applied to the field of public health throughout her career.
