Dr. John E. Maupin is President and Chief Executive Officer of Meharry Medical College, a position he has held since 1994. He came to Meharry from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, where he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer from 1989 to 1994. Before joining Morehouse, he was Chief Executive Officer of Southside Healthcare, Inc., in Atlanta, from 1987 to 1989. From 1981 to 1987, Dr. Maupin served in the Baltimore City Health Department, first as Assistant Commissioner of Clinical Services and then as Deputy Commissioner of Health. Prior to this appointment, he served as Dental Director of the West Baltimore Community Health Center in Baltimore, Maryland, from 1976 to 1981.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Dr. Maupin received his undergraduate training at San Jose State College. He continued his education at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, where he received his D.D.S. in 1972. Dr. Maupin completed a General Dentistry residency at Provident Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1973 and earned his M.B.A. at Loyola College in Baltimore in 1979.

Dr. Maupin was National President of the National Dental Association in 1984 and has served on several scientific advisory groups, including the Board of Scientific Counselors, National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (1989-1994), and National Advisory Dental Research Council of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research. He is currently a member of the National Committee on Foreign Medical Education Accreditation of the U.S. Department of Education and the National Advisory Research Resources Council of the National Center for Research Resources at the National Institutes of Health, as well as the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center Board of Overseers.
