Dr. Cathy D. Meade is a Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Oncology, Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, at the University of South Florida College of Medicine and Director of the Education Program at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. She also holds a joint appointment in the College of Nursing.

Dr. Meade's areas of expertise include groundbreaking studies on the disparity in reading levels between patients and published health information as well as the development of culturally and literacy-sensitive cancer communications and outreach programs. She has produced numerous easy-to-understand printed and electronic materials and media for lay audiences to underscore these important issues. Her research and education interests center on finding ways to create meaningful cancer messages; developing community-centered education, outreach, and screening initiatives for diverse populations; promoting understanding of the clinical trial process; and developing innovative cancer training programs to increase the number of scientists from underrepresented populations.

Dr. Meade has served as a member of the National Cancer Institute's working groups on Cancer and Literacy and Informed Consent in Cancer Clinical Trials for increasing awareness of the impact of literacy on health care. She was also a member of the Institute of Medicine's Health Literacy Committee, which produced the 2004 report titled Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion. Dr. Meade leads a number of education activities that address the nexus of cancer, culture, and literacy and oversees the Cancer Center's community education and outreach initiatives.
