Carmen P. Moten, Ph.D., M.P.H., is a Program Director/Health Scientist Administrator in the Disparities Training Branch, Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In this role, Dr. Moten plans, develops, and manages programs that address the clinical, behavioral or population science research designed to eliminate cancer and co-morbid health disparities, and serves as Co-Program Director on a geographically based disparities research initiative.

Prior to joining CRCHD, Dr. Moten served as Program Director of the Primary Care, Health Disparities, and Socio-Cultural Mental Health Services Research Programs in the Division of Services and Intervention Research at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. In this capacity, she provided scientific leadership and oversight of research grants, research training grants, cooperative agreements, and funding opportunity announcements. In addition, Dr. Moten collaborated and consulted with Federal agencies, research investigators, those in clinical practice and community organizations about extramural research, research training, and related activity that could contribute significantly to treatment and health-related outcomes. She also served on NIMH, NIH, HHS and inter-departmental committees which were organized for the purpose of addressing critical issues relevant to mental health and co-morbid translational research. Dr. Moten’s research interests included mental health preventive interventions, health disparities, primary care, social-cultural and psychosocial issues, community based participatory research, and other mental health related issues, such as, trauma, stigma, and risk and protective factors.

Dr. Moten received her Ph.D. from Howard University, in Developmental and Personality Psychology and her MPH from the University of North at Chapel Hill, in Health Behavior and Health Education.
