Mock Review

CRCHD is pleased to recognize a number of our trainees who presented at the CURE Professional Development Workshop Podium and Poster presentation. More than 80 NCI CURE grantees attended The Path Forward: Training Fundamentals and Research Advancement professional development workshop.

DTB CURE program director, Dr. Bailey says the Professional Development and Peer Review Workshop "provides grantees with the opportunity to craft sound research career trajectories and enhance fundamentals like grantsmanship and publication."

Dr. Ojeifo, describes the workshop as "an excellent opportunity to meet face to face with current grantees and discuss topics like mentoring and current challenges."

Congratulations to all the winners for their stellar podium and poster presentations.

Podium Winners:

Dr. Christina Zavaleta The first place winner Dr. Christina Zavatela from Stanford University presented her work on development of exciting imaging technology using nanoparticles titled “A new strategy for preclinical cancer imaging with Raman Spectroscopy.”


Dr. Claudia Miller Dr. Claudia Miller from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center who is a F31 recipient won the second place for her presentation on “Caspase 8 and oxidant-dependent hyperacetylation of histone-H3 by the novel proteosome inhibitor MPI-0052.”


Dr. Miriam Bucheli

The third place winner was Dr. Miriam Bucheli from Harvard Medical School who presented her work on “Basics of RNA binding proteins in transcription termination.”


Poster Winners:

Dr. Joseph Agyin Dr. Joseph Agyin from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, a K01 recipient, won the first place for his poster presentation. The title of his poster was “Bone seeking proteasome inhibitors for myeloma” where he presented work on BU-32, a new drug for multiple myeloma and breast cancer cells.”


Dr. Daniel Hughes Dr. Daniel Hughes from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center won second place for his work on Cardiac rehabilitation for cancer survivors with heart failure: A case study


Melinda Angus-Hill Melinda Angus-Hill from University of Utah won the third place for her poster on Tcf/Lef function during epithelial cell maintenance and colon tumorigenesis.


Mock Review:

Dr. Gregory Carey The Mock review was the highlight of the professional development workshop. The reviewers who participated did a great job in reviewing R01 and R03 grant applications in a very professional manner.

The chairman of the panel Dr. Gregory Carey, a K22 recipient, was wonderful and did a fantastic job in reviewing all the grants and running the review as a chairperson does in a regular study section.

Dr. Rina Das, Disparities Research Branch Program Director, says "he stepped up to the challenge and filled in for some reviewers who had conflicts."
