Dr. Vogel has been the Director (1999-2008) and Professor (1999-current) of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii at the University of Hawaii. He is also a Clinical Professor of Pathology. Dr. Vogel is board-certified in clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Prior to his appointment as Cancer Center Director, Dr. Vogel was a faculty member at Georgetown University/Lombardi Cancer Center and a department chair at the University of Hamburg.
Dr. Vogel maintains an active research laboratory focusing on the complement system and its role in cancer and other diseases. In addition to being the principal investigator of a U56 Cancer Center/Minority Institution Partnership grant with the University of Guam since 2003, Dr. Vogel is also the principal investigator of the Cancer Information Service – Pacific, and a DOD-funded partnership with Tripler Army Medical Center. During his tenure as Cancer Center Director, he expanded the region of service of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii to include the three US territories in the Pacific (Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa) and the three freely associated compact countries (Republic of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau).
Dr. Vogel obtained his MD and PhD degree in Biochemistry from the University of Hamburg. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla and completed residency training at Georgetown University and Indiana University.
