Scientific research is analogous to assembling an intricate and difficult puzzle. The traditional approach to assembling a complete puzzle is to take each piece and understand its function in isolation to determine where it best fits. In contrast to conventional approaches, systems biology allows you to look at multiple pieces simultaneously, in order to understand the complex interplay that creates the puzzle. My interest in systems biology allows me the opportunity to acquire and integrate knowledge from areas such as genome analysis, transcriptome, and proteomic expression. My current thesis research has focused on using a systems biology approach to identify modifiers and genetic networks associated with predisposition to colorectal cancer using a mouse model to mimic human sporadic colorectal cancer.
I received my undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with a major in biology and minors in chemistry and Spanish. After graduating, I spent two years conducting mutation analysis research at the Center for Human Genetics at Duke University. I have returned to UNC to complete my doctorate in Genetics and Molecular Biology under the mentorship of Dr. David Threadgill.
After the successful completion of my doctorate, I would like to obtain a post-doctoral position and subsequent research position in an institution that seeks to identify genetic and molecular targets involved in cancer progression related to an individual's ethnic background.
